Accent Day!!!

I talked about this a bit on the repodding podcast - but that's Saturday, so I'll break it down for you. I've been informed that paraka talks about me in today's podcast, but as of now I don't know what she said, so anyway...

Every podficcer has an accent; sometimes that accent matches that of the canon character, sometimes it doesn't. Every accent is special and brings something to the podfic, it represents the podficcer and reminds us just how diverse fandom can be. Come celebrate accents and learn more about them in podfic at pod_aware on LJ or DW.

Podfic is FANTASTIC for experimentation!

I podfic in a fandom where the characters are all American. I am very much NOT American, I'd say I have a fairly obvious Southern English BBC accent - or what some people call Received Pronunciation. For Accent Day I wanted to experiment with reading a podfic in the accent of the characters. I chose to take an existing podfic because, I felt this was the best way as, a) I'd get a bit of help from listening to how shiningartifact reads and b) if I fail and people think this version is unlistenable, I haven't ruined a fic people love and they can run over to shiningartifact for comfort and reassurance. To make that easier for people, here is a link to that AMAZING version. I'm going to post a 'Straight' (!) repod version on repodding day. MULTIPLE VERSIONS are awesome people - embrace it!

DISCLAIMER: I AM ATTEMPTING A NORTH AMERICAN ACCENT. NO AMERICANS WERE HARMED DURING THE MAKING OF THIS PODFIC. NO OFFENCE IS MEANT. (Also, I am trying out my new mic, and I haven't worked out the kinks yet).

Party Games (American Accent Version) by knight_tracer

I am very interested in this being used to start off discussion. Does the American accent (attempt) make the story unlistenable, as it is too strained/bad/awkward ? Does it make you laugh? Do you like it? Do you like the repod aspect to it?

I gotta say, your American accent is pretty damn good! <3

It seems a little strained, like it's taking thought to do it, so I WANT YOUR NON-AMERICAN ACCENT PLEASE!

YES!!! This is something I was very unsure about. But, I talked about it in the podcast and talked about it a lot in various places. Without the encouragement I got I would never have finished it.
Thanks so much for listening and it means a lot to me that you liked it.

Tune in this Saturday for the 'Straight'(!) version. Repodding is so much fun!

I tend to think that matching accent of the reader to the accent of the source is... unnecessary? A weirdly xenophobic thing to want from podfic? Especially because you are telling us a story, you're not necessarily going to have to match voices/accents with the characters, unless that is a kind of performance you enjoy doing naturally--it's not a requirement for the form, in my opinion. I like this reading, especially the dialogue. But I would vastly prefer hearing you using your own accent, though, because the accent you tried here was distracting, it slowed down your pacing and did feel like you were stretching for it too much :/

On the other hand, it was awesome to hear your voice, and I think this is an interesting experiment to do for pod_aware!

I don't see myself doing this again. I definitely think I lose the variation and nuances I can achieve with my regular voice - I think it's very limited. Also, most of the characters I read are male (although I have made 3 podfics with bandom characters as girls) - I personally think that's a bigger separation from reality than accent is. I also don't think it was a 'uniform' accent, certain sounds were easier to make eg. Awesome, really, too, now, while others were impossible eg. fingers (no idea why).

As an experiment it was a lot of fun! Although I don't think I have EVER spent so long working on such a short podfic.

Come back on Saturday! REPODDING!
